Lack of support for PhD mams | @jenhmanuel on Mums Will Talk

Seventeen months ago I became a mam for the first time to the best little boy (I would say that!).

It has been the most incredible journey and, at the moment, with my little one learning new things all the time, the days get more exciting and my love keeps growing – if that is possible!

Being a mam is the best job that I have but it’s not the only one. I work full time and it’s difficult. I’m currently finishing my PhD thesis so I’m essentially writing a book whilst also teaching undergraduate students, applying for jobs, and generally trying to succeed as a woman in a male-dominated academic discipline.

There is such a lack of support for PhD mams out there and it’s not talked about enough. I’m trying to be the best mam I can whilst pushing a tonne of mam guilt out of my head.

I wouldn’t change any of it for the world and I hope my little one will learn from my experiences. In the meantime, I take breaks with my family to go exploring outside and spend time together – and that is the most important part of my life.”
